  1. Town Trails of Fonthill
About a seven-minute drive from Appellation is this 7.2 km loop trail. Town Trails of Fonthill is considered an easier option that takes an average of 1 hour and 36 minutes to complete. Whether you prefer hiking, biking or running, this urban hike through residential areas is worth checking out. With a mostly flat path and different scenic views along the trail, Town Trails of Fonthill is a popular choice for locals to explore year-round.

  2. Welland Canal Parkway Trail
Stretching a total of 40 km along the Welland Canal from St. Catharines to Port Colborne, the Welland Canal Parkway trail is a standout in the Niagara Region. We recommend going for a run or bike ride along this trail, but don’t forget to stop and take in the beautiful views along the way! If 40 km seems like a lot (it is!), you can focus on the 6.9 km Merritt Park Loop, a section of Merritt Park from the Main Street Bridge to Humberstone. This shorter trail gives a taste of the Welland Canal Parkway Trail, but takes an average of 1 hour and 14 minutes to complete. Enter from anywhere along the canal and enjoy spotting the birds and water sports throughout the trail.

  3. Steve Bauer Trail
Named after the distinguished Canadian Olympic cyclist, this trail in Pelham is a popular spot for mountain biking, hiking, and even cross-country skiing in the winter. Spanning 6 km point-to-point, this trail is considered easy and takes an average of 1 hour and 6 minutes to complete. Enjoy the natural landscapes along this trail and access different parks and community spaces, including Pelham Town Square, Harold Black Park, Pelham Corners Park, and Woodstream Park.

  4. St. John's Conservation Area Trail
The St. John’s Conservation Area is a tranquil 76-acre nature retreat containing several trails. Each trail is clearly marked so that you can decide which is best for you that day. With trails ranging from 15-40 minutes to complete, there are so many ways to enjoy the scenery. If you’re looking for an even longer hike, the trails connect and form a loop, so you can easily explore different areas. Whether you want to hike, connect with nature, or even do a little trout fishing (the spring-fed pond is stocked with rainbow trout), St. John’s Conservation Area is worth the visit.

Whether you’re looking to be active, entertain the kids, or enjoy some serenity, Welland’s trails offer something for everyone.
